Temple in Genting Highlands lines up activities for Mid-Autumn festival

CELEBRATE the Mid-Autumn festival with family and friends at the Chin Swee Caves Temple, Genting Highlands as the temple has lined up a list of activities until Sept 19.

In conjunction with the festival that falls on Sept 22 this year, there will be colourful giant lanterns displayed throughout the event.

The lanterns will be displayed at the Sky Terrace of the temple.

It will be lighted up every day from 7.30pm to midnight throughout the period.

In addition, a special lantern procession will be held at the temple’s premises on Sept 19 at 7pm.

Members of the public can join this lantern procession to make their mid-autumn celebration a memorable one.

Apart from the giant lantern display, local food and merchandise bazaar and a list of stage activities will also be held at the Sky Terrace until Sept 19 from Noon to 8pm.

There will be lucky draw sessions where participants stand a chance to win exciting prizes worth more than RM12,000.

Free shuttle bus services from Highlands Hotel to Chin Swee Caves Temple will be available every hour from 9am to 9pm.

THE late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong was a living legend when he was alive.

He passed away yesterday at 90 and his success story in turning the forested hills of Genting into a fabulous casino resort will remain unrivalled for years to come.

The business empire he left behind encompasses plantations, property, power generation, oil and gas exploration and cruise industries.

Lim epitomised the rags to riches story of the Chinese diaspora.

He was only 19 when he arrived in Malaya from Fujian Province in China with only a suitcase and US$175.

His early businesses were diverse and he was also involved in building the Air Itam Dam in Penang.

But the Genting Highlands dream began in the 1960s.

It is often said that he built Genting out of his bare hands and in a way he did because he was very hands-on and survived several close brushes with death during its development.

But more than that, the saga of Lim and Genting Highlands is the story of a how this pioneering figure had the daring to pursue a vision, sweat and toil to achieve it, seize opportunities, take calculated risks and manage success.

A commemorative volume, titled My Dream, published on the 35th anniversary of the Genting Group showed Lim against a panoramic backdrop of the casino resort. He was then at his peak yet he looked so unassuming, wearing a rather pensive smile, chin cupped in his hand and his hair still a lush black.

GENTING HIGHLANDS: Gohtong Villa, the double-storey residence of the late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, is on a hill about halfway up Genting Highlands away from the bustle of the famous casino and hotel chain that he founded.

Sitting on a huge piece of land, the villa, which has an elevator, cannot be seen from the road below. A 2km long road leads up to Lim’s private sanctuary.

Three vacant plots of land just outside the villa have been converted into temporary car parks for VIPs.

Opposite the main entrance of the 1,860-square-metre bungalow, which was completed in 1998, is a sprawling garden with neatly trimmed hedges and a cornucopia of flora and trees. Directly below the garden is a basement car park, which is big enough for 20-30 cars.

The imposing villa, which faces the north-west, offers visitors a view of Genting Hotel to the north and a beautiful vista of the surrounding hillside.

The Genting Story

When it comes to the Genting story, most Malaysians will recognise it as synonymous with the rise of its namesake hill resort,Genting Highlands Resort. Many though may not have truly appreciated the mammoth task involved in its construction and the vast resources and reserves mobilised to ensure what has proven today to be an unprecedented success in resort development.

Looking Back with Pride
The idea of a hill resort was chanced upon by Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong amidst the crisp air of Cameron Highlands in 1964. Tan Sri Lim was then working on a hydro-electric power project at the popular hill resort, patronised mostly by British colonials seeking cool refuge from the tropical heat, when he foresaw a prosperous Malaysia of the future desiring a cool mountain holiday resort within the reach of all Malaysians.

The Challenges
A study of the maps and Kuala Lumpur’s vicinity located the ideal site - the 1,800-metre Gunung Ulu Kali, just 58 km from Kuala Lumpur. Amidst the dense virgin tropical jungle and rugged terrain, the task to transform a remote mountain into Malaysia’s premier holiday destination seemed impossible… but not for Tan Sri Lim.

The Mammoth Task Begins
Setting up a private company called Genting Highlands Berhad on 27 April 1965, with the late Tan Sri Haji Mohammed Noah bin Omar, Tan Sri Lim successfully obtained approval for the alienation of 12,000 acres and 2,800 acres of land from the Pahang and Selangor State Government respectively between the years 1965 and 1970.

On 18 August 1965, a technical and construction team began the herculean task that would take four years to complete the access road from Genting Sempah to the peak of Gunung Ulu Kali.

To ensure the sound and prompt construction of the hotel-cum-resort, Tan Sri Lim devoted all of his time, capital and resources, including the reserves of his family company, Kien Huat Berhad towards the making of this "dream resort".

The Beginning
On 31March 1969, the late YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister graced the official laying of the foundation stone for the company’s pioneer hotel, the then Highlands Hotel, marking the completion of the access road to Genting Highlands Resort.

Impressed that the private sector, without the assistance of the Government, could develop a mountain resort for the enjoyment of all Malaysians, a gaming licence was suggested to help accelerate the development of this remote area.

In 1971, the first hotel at Genting Highlands was successfully completed and was then named Highlands Hotel (now renamed Theme Park Hotel).

The Development - Genting Highlands Resort

Since the opening of the first hotel in 1971, Genting Highlands Resort continued to grow from strength to strength. The development of the area continued to this present day to enhance Genting Highlands Resort as the premier holiday destination in the region while ensuring that the natural beauty of the rain forest is maintained.

To date, Genting Highlands Resort has five hotels (namely Genting Hotel, Highlands Hotel, Resort Hotel, Theme Park Hotel and First World Hotel) and two apartment blocks (Ria and Kayangan Apartments) at the hilltop and Awana Genting Highlands Golf and Country Resort.

Together with integrated world-standard entertainment facilities encompassing various leisure, indoor and outdoor theme parks and gaming facilities, Genting Highlands Resort has become the "City of Entertainment" and Malaysia's Premier Resort.

In 1997, Genting Highlands Resort further boosted its facility attraction with Genting Skyway cable car system that provides a 3.38 km transport to the hilltop. Genting Skyway is also recognised as the "World's Fastest Mono Cable Car System" with a maximum speed of 21.6 km per hour and the "Longest Cable Car in Malaysia and Southeast Asia".

The Expansion - Genting Group

GENTING - City Of Entertainment has another exciting attraction in November, specially for magic enthusiasts of all ages.

It is the Genting International Magic Festival 2007 which will be held from Nov 16 to 25 at the Genting International Showroom in Genting Hotel.

The event is a gathering of the world's top magicians.

They will be participating in the Champions of Magic Show and the Stars of Magic Show which feature established as well as budding magicians. The magicians will be competing for the grand prize of US$10,000 (RM34,300).

The event is expected to attract youngsters and the young at heart from around Malaysia. It is officially recognised and supported by the International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM).

GENTING HIGHLANDS: It looks like a giant bowling ball and weighs three tonnes.

The priceless self-glowing mineral orb discovered in Asia is one of over 500 unique rare uncut natural gemstones on display at the Gems of the World exhibition at Genting Hotel.

Other unique one-of-a-kind natural crystal formations at the exhibition resemble, among others, fish, fairytale castles and the top-part of Menara Kuala Lumpur.

The exhibition, which started yesterday, is part of Genting - City of Entertainment's attractions and will be on display for a year.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor launched the exhibition. Also present were Genting Group chairman and chief executive Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay and Resorts World Berhad executive vice-president of resorts operations Alan Teo.
“We need more private sector players to complement the government's efforts to promote the country's tourism industry,” Tengku Adnan said.

He lauded Genting's effort in organising the exhibition, which is expected to attract 10 million tourists.

On tourist arrivals, he said the country recorded 12.4 million visitors for the first seven months of this year. They spent more than RM20 billion so far.

“This is an increase of 23.9 per cent compared with the same period last year.”

International pop group Black Eyed Peas, who will perform at Genting Highlands Arena Of Stars tomorrow, will dedicate the show to Genting founder Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong who died last Tuesday.

“We would like to convey our condolences to his family and loved ones. We would also like to dedicate our show to him,” said band leader William Adams or better known as will.i.am at a press conference here.

Present were band members Allan Pineda Lindo (apl.de.ap), Jaime Luis Gomez (Taboo) and ex-Wild Orchid Stacy Ann Ferguson (Fergie).

The Black, Blue and You Tour marks the famous four’s third visit to Malaysia after two performance in 2004 and 2005.

“It has been a while but we are glad to include Malaysia in our tour. We are excited to share our new materials with our Malaysian fans,” said will.i.am.
Fergie said the band was impressed with the greenery in Genting Highlands, which she described as refreshing.

Despite pursuing solo careers, Fergie and will.i.am have assured fans their fullest commitment to the tour.

“We just simply do it,” said will.i.am on their ability to accommodate the band’s tour with their solo careers.

“It is like a big salad bowl. We take this as an advantage to blend in our solo efforts with the group’s projects. We have more variations and colours for our showcase,” added Fergie.

will.i.am, who is in the midst of promoting his first solo album entitled “Songs About Girls”, promised fans a great show, with he and Fergie rendering songs from the group and their solo albums.

The band is expected to perform their hit songs such as “Where Is The Love”, “My Humps”, “Hey Mama” and “Shut Up”.

Fergie will serenade the crowd with her fifth single from her debut album, The Dutchess called Clumsy.

The girlfriend of television heartthrob Josh Duhamel said she would make some alterations to her outfits for the show.

IPOH: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi yesterday extended his condolences to the family of the late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong.

Despite his hectic schedule, Abdullah promised to find time to pay his last respects and visit the family.

He described the late Lim as a hardworking entrepreneur who had contributed immensely to the country's economy in various industries.

"He was a philanthropist, and his death is a loss to the country and society at large," Abdullah said.

KUALA LUMPUR: The man who built a city "atop the clouds" and created a US$4.3 billion (RM14.6 billion) gaming and leisure empire has died, his accomplishments a testament to the Malaysia Boleh spirit.

Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong’s children, Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay and his sister Lim Siew Lian, announcing his death at an impromptu press conference in Subang Jaya Medical Centre.

Genting Bhd founder and billionaire Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong died at 11.20am at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre yesterday, his son Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay said.

"He passed away peacefully of old age," said Kok Thay, making the announcement at the SJMC lobby.

Kok Thay is Genting's chairman.

Flanked by his sister Lim Siew Lian, Kok Thay said their father had been admitted two days earlier.
The enterprising businessman arrived in Malaya in 1937, aged 19, with just 178 yuan in his pocket.

He worked his way to becoming a contractor, and helped build the Cameron hydroelectric dam in 1963.

It was then that he conceived the idea of building a highland resort close to Kuala Lumpur. Genting in Mandarin means "atop the clouds".

Obtaining the country's only casino licence, he turned the Genting Highlands resort into a sprawling empire that owned casinos in the United Kingdom, hotels and the third-largest cruise line in the world, worth about RM77 billion.

Malaysia's third richest man, Goh Tong is survived by wife Puan Sri Lee Kim Hua, six children and 19 grandchildren.

Lee left the private hospital tearful and sad, about two hours after her husband's death. She was escorted to a waiting car by bodyguards who kept the waiting press away.

Security was tight on SJMC's fifth floor, where Goh Tong's body lay. About a half-dozen policemen were tasked with restricting entry to the fifth floor and the hospital's basement car park to authorised hospital personnel and family members only.

At 5.05pm, an ambulance, its windows heavily tinted and escorted by two police patrol cars, left the basement carpark bearing Goh Tong's remains. A convoy of eight cars followed.

The convoy arrived at his villa in Gohtong Jaya, just several kilometres before Genting Highlands, at 6.15pm. ed by police.

In a statement, the Genting Group said the wake would be at the Gohtong Villa from noon today to midnight on Sunday.

Those driving are advised to proceed to Awana Genting Golf and Country Resort where shuttle buses will be provided to transfer them to the villa.

Free shuttle services will also be provided from Pasar Rakyat Bus Terminal, KL and Terminal Putra, Gombak to Genting Skyway on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 5pm.

The funeral will be on Monday. The cortege will leave the villa at 10am for burial at the Gohtong Memorial Park.

The casino, theme park, all entertainment outlets and food and beverage outlets will be closed on Monday from 6am to 6pm as a mark of respect.

At around 4th mile, Jalan Gombak, make a left turn to Kg Bandar Dalam, proceed on, then take a right turn (follow Kuantan) to Karak Highway.

One-day trip to Genting Highlands with my cousin!

Yesterday, i went up to Genting Highlands with my cousin, Danica. We went to Genting via the cabel car. Wow, the cabel car ride was packed with lots of people. There were many tourists from other countries, mainly from India. We queued for almost an hour just to get aboard the cabel car. We reached Genting about 12.30 pm. We had our lunch before we entered the outdoor theme park. When we got into the theme park, we sat almost all the rides. We sat the swing, the roller coaster, the pirate ship and many more. Too bad we couldn't finish playing all the rides because it was getting late. Anyway, i really had a fun time in Genting, though i actually felt sad thati had to skip church and also the Frens Forever practice session, cuz i heard from samuel that they learnt new song and also the dance moves for "Get Real". I felt a bit regretted leaving church just for that particular day. I also felt a bit of regret for missing Miss Moey's message on Sunday. Since I'm going to stay there for 3 days 2 nights there, I might as well write about the hotel. Awana Genting Highlands is near to Kuala Lumpur. It is just an hour from KL. It is located on the way to Genting Theme park which is situated on the top to the peak. I have been there many times. I love the weather, much cooler than KL. Sometimes there are a lot of fog and difficult to see the road too.. It has a abundant greenery and lush panoramas. It is certainly a prefect short get away for most KLian especially during short weekend break.
